Frances Florez, a former elected official in a small Kern County town -- and the mother of former Democratic state Sen. Dean Florez -- has been appointed by a California Senate panel to a state commission post that pays $56,095 annually, plus travel expenses, and meets twice a month on average.
Senate leader Darrell Steinberg announced her appointment Thursday to the California Medical Assistance Commission. A former member of the city council in Shafter, Calif., Frances Florez left the state board that oversees high-speed rail to mount an unsuccessful run for a state Assembly seat last year.
The appointment was approved by the Senate Rules Committee, which is chaired by Steinberg, a Democrat from Sacramento.
