World Series Game 2 updates: Giants blow it open against Rangers, 9-0, after eight innings

A meltdown in the Texas Rangers’ relief corps -- all with two outs -- opened the door for a seven-run eighth inning that gave the San Francisco Giants a 9-0 lead in World Series Game 2 at AT&T Park in San Francisco.

The Giants are now set to win the first two games of the best-of-seven series.

In the bottom of the inning, Texas reliver Darren O’Day got two outs before Giants catcher Buster Posey singled.

O’Day was replaced by the left-handed Derek Holland, who threw 11 consecutive balls to walk Nate Schierholtz and Cody Ross to load the bases, then went 3-0 to Aubrey Huff before eventually walking him, forcing home the Giants’ third run.

Holland then was mercifully lifted and replaced by right-hander Mark Lowe, who started Juan Uribe with -- you guessed it -- a ball and eventually walked him, widening the San Francisco lead to 4-0.

Then the roof fell in on the Rangers, as Edgar Renteria singled, Aaron Rowand hit a pinch-hit triple and Andres Torres doubled.

Giants starter Matt Cain, meanwhile, left the game in their half of the eighth inning after completely shutting down the high-scoring Rangers.

Cain gave up only four hits in his 7 2/3 innings of scoreless work, and he now hasn’t allowed an earned run in three starts in the MLB playoffs.
