The Woodbridge Classic gets under way with a bang on Saturday, but who knows if there will be any noise afterward.
Perhaps the two best teams in the venerable tournament open against each other in a pool-play round game to determine which goes to the championship bracket and which plays on the consolation side.
El Modena, No. 7 in The Times’ ranking, will play No. 9 Marina at 8 a.m. There are 24 games scheduled for Saturday at Bill Barber Park. Statewide, El Modena is No. 8 and Marina is No. 14, according to CalHiSports.com.
No other team in the the 24-team tournament is ranked by Cal-Hi Sports. Mission Viejo, The Times’ No. 15 team, is in a pool with Woodbridge and Elsinore. The only other team in the Southland rankings is No. 25 Foothill, which is in a pool with Los Alamitos and San Clemente. The winner of that pool will play the winner of the El Modena-Marina pool.
