The girls’ 100 meters is, obviously, a race for the young. Only one senior, Yasmin Woodruff of St. Mary’s Academy, was in the finals of the Southern Section-Toyota Masters meet Friday at Cerritos College. Woodruff finished second in 11.73 seconds.
Jessica Davis, a sophomore from Highland, was the winner with a state-best 11.62 (knocking off Woodruff’s 11.65 from last week’s section finals), and Valexsia Droughn, a freshman at Rio Mesa, was third at 11.93.
Five of the other six runners in the event are juniors (eighth-place Ronisha Vallery of North Torrance is a sophomore).
Davis vs. Droughn could develop into a great rivalry over the next couple of years. Let’s hope so.
