Football: Taft leads San Fernando, 14-10, at halftime

Well, the MudBowl out here at Taft HS is living up to its reputation, and the Toreadors are enjoying a 14-10 halftime lead thanks to the efforts of USC-bound junior running back D.J. Morgan.

Morgan has scored both of Taft’s touchdowns, the latest coming on a 19-yard run midway through the second quarter. He’s rushed for 82 yards in 16 carries and also has three catches for 53 yards. He’d probably have even more yards, but the mudslick covering the entire Taft field is making it hard for everybody to find traction.

His San Fernando counterpart, Daniel Lopez, has 62 yards in 11 carries. However, San Fernando quarterback Rashaad Reynolds has kept the Tigers in the game, connecting on a 30-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Leon Jones late in the second quarter.

Reynolds has completed just two of eight passes for an unusual 108 yards. His first completion came on a 78-yard pass to Leon, which set up a successful, 23-yard field goal by Eduardo Luna.

It’s still drizzling out here at Taft HS, so my 21st century capabilities are limited. I’ll be sure to blog a final score once this City Section Championship Division quarterfinal ends.
