Sobriety Checkpoints: Safety Versus Privacy Intrusions

On behalf of the Orange County chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD), I wish to thank you for expressing views similar to ours in your editorial, “Checkpoints, a Sobering Effect” (Times, Dec. 16).
We agree that the sobriety checkpoints as implemented by the Anaheim Police Department constitute minimal governmental intrusions into the motoring public’s privacy.
These “intrusions,” weighed against the substantial decrease in fatalities experienced in the 21 states that use checkpoints, provide what we believe to be a clear-cut choice in favor of such programs.
