U.S. Cuts Foreign Fishing Limits

WASHINGTON — Foreign fishermen will be allowed to take 230,000 metric tons of fish in the U.S. economic zone off Alaska--less than half last year’s allocation--the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced today.
The initial allocation covers the first half of the year, and the final six months generally receive a similar allowance. The reduction in the foreign fishing allocation reflects an expected increase in the take by U.S. fishermen, government officials said. Japan is the largest user of the foreign allocation.
