Although the score doesn’t reflect the difference, Southern California College easily beat Azusa-Pacific, 69-61, Friday night in NAIA District 3 conference action at Costa Mesa.
Azusa-Pacific, which led 10-8 early in the first half, never got closer than eight points the rest of the game. Junior guard Ken Bardsley, recovering from an infection in his left foot, followed up a strong performance against Biola last Tuesday night with 19 points and 8 rebounds.
Senior point guard Sherwin Durham is still missing from the Vanguard lineup. Durham, who has been benched since January 3 because of academic ineligibility, is not expected to return until January 19 when SCC meets Westmont, the NAIA District 3 champions, in what may be the Vanguard’s toughest game yet. Junior guards Robert Aviles, with 8 points, and Randy McAllister, with 11 points, have substituted for Durham at the point guard position.
Azusa Pacific 6-foot 7-inch freshman forward Tim DesRoches led all scorers with 17 points.
The victory improves SCC’s record to 13-2 overall, 2-0 in conference. Azusa Pacific is 4-7 and 1-1.
SCC will play Pt. Loma Tuesday night at San Diego.
