$17 Billion in Prescription Drugs Purchased in 1982

WASHINGTON — Americans spent $17 billion in 1982 on prescription drugs, with high blood pressure medication, birth control pills and codeine topping the list, a Food and Drug Administration researcher reported Thursday.
U.S. retail pharmacists filled about 1.5 billion prescriptions in 1982, the latest year for which totals are available, researcher Carlene Baum reported in the Journal of the American Medical Assn.
