LONDON — A record volume of zinc was mined and refined last year in nations with capitalist economies, the International Lead and Zinc Study Group said.
The group, which includes representatives from the world’s top 30 producing and consuming countries, said that mine output in 1984 rose 4% to 4.98 million metric tons. Refined metal production was up 3.8% to 4.8 million metric tons, it said.
Zinc consumption by non-communist nations rose 2.1% last year to 4.7 million tons, it said. This was the highest total since 1979 and 3% below the peak of 4.84 million metric tons in 1973.
A metric ton equals about 2,204.6 pounds.
