Agency Says U.S. Pays for Unused Phone Lines

WASHINGTON — The government is paying for about 12,000 unused, unneeded or disconnected telephone lines in the Washington area costing about $4.2 million annually, the General Services Administration said Friday.
The report said that, if the same situation exists nationwide, there could be 36,000 lines in the same categories and that the cost to the government could be $12.6 million annually. The GSA called for “immediate action” on the problem.
