Meese Sworn In as Atty. Gen.

WASHINGTON — Edwin Meese III was sworn in today as attorney general, his yearlong struggle to become the nation’s chief law enforcement officer finally at an end.
President Reagan and Meese’s wife, Ursula, attended the brief, informal ceremony at the White House that was also attended by Vice President George Bush and Reagan’s chief of staff, Donald T. Regan. Meese, who was confirmed Saturday by the Senate in a 63-31 vote, then went to the Justice Department to visit the office he will occupy.
