LONDON — The widow of a British soldier killed by a bomb in Northern Ireland has sold her husband’s bravery medal at an auction, saying that she needs the money to support her two children.
The National Army Museum bought the George Cross medal at Christie’s auction house Thursday for the equivalent of $22,160. The award, created by King George VI in 1940, is given for acts of courage in cases of extreme danger.
Sgt. Michael Willetts received the award posthumously in June, 1971. A month earlier, he was killed while shielding others from a bomb left in a Belfast police station.
