Freed Dutch Nazi Goes to Gardener’s Cottage

THE HAGUE — Nazi war criminal Pieter Menten, 84, a millionaire Dutch art collector, was released from prison Friday and returned to the gardener’s cottage of his former home in Blaricum, southeast of Amsterdam, where he will stay while deciding his future.

The ailing Menten, who served two-thirds of a 10-year sentence for his part in the massacre of Polish Jews in 1941, has been barred from returning to Ireland, where he owns a mansion. Arsonists in 1980 destroyed the main house of his Blaricum estate, leaving only the gardener’s cottage standing.
