Philippine High Court Cancels Death Sentence

MANILA — The Philippine Supreme Court overturned a death sentence imposed on a man tortured into confessing to a murder eight years ago and recommended charges against interrogators who tortured him.
Human rights activists said Monday it was the first time that the court, appointed by President Ferdinand E. Marcos, had thrown out a conviction based on findings that the suspect was tortured into confessing.
In its decision, the court said agents of the National Bureau of Investigation broke the man’s will after five days of interrogation and torture that included pushing his head into a toilet bowl of human waste.
