LAKE OSWEGO, Ore. — Rock superstar Bruce Springsteen outmaneuvered his fans and the media today, marrying a 25-year-old Oregon actress in a private Roman Catholic ceremony shortly after midnight.
The Rev. Paul Peri officiated at the wedding of Springsteen, 35, and Julianne Phillips at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in the fashionable Portland suburb of Lake Oswego, the bride’s mother confirmed.
“The children wanted to get married without all the confusion,” said Mrs. William Phillips, who answered the door at the family home.
“Oh, my goodness, now I’m going to get into trouble. I shouldn’t be talking to you.”
William Phillips Jr., brother of the bride, told a Portland radio station that the wedding was originally planned for Wednesday. But word leaked out and fans, reporters and photographers began gathering in Lake Oswego, staking out the family home and church.
“Everybody was really concerned about it becoming a circus. Bruce was really concerned,” Phillips told station KKRZ. “So the family members said do what you want to do.”
Springsteen, known to his fans as “The Boss,” met Phillips backstage at a concert six months ago in Los Angeles when they were introduced by their respective agents. The marriage is the first for both.
