Chapman Opens in NCAA Tennis Today

The Chapman College men’s tennis team, ranked third in the nation, will meet Stephen F. Austin University at 9 today in the first round of the NCAA Division 2 Nationals team competition, which runs through Wednesday at Cal State Northridge.
The Panthers (21-12), the tournament’s No. 2 seed, are making their third straight appearance in the nationals. Last year, they finished fourth, and in 1983, seventh.
Stephen F. Austin, located in Nacogdoches, Tex., is 12-9. Last year, the Lumberjacks finished fifth in the nationals.
Rollins College, the No. 3 seed and 20-9 on the year, meets the University of Tennessee-Martin (20-5) in the other 9 a.m. match today.
The tournament’s No. 1-seed, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (24-3), meets Ferris State College (14-7) of Big Rapids, Mich., at 12:30 p.m. today. Also at 12:30, No. 4 Hampton Institute (30-6) of Hampton, Va. faces Cal State Hayward (16-4).
