PARIS — An engineer on the world’s fastest train committed suicide by jumping out of his moving cab into a tunnel wall, news reports said Monday.
Rene M. Savait wrote a brief farewell in his work ledger Saturday before diving out of the sleek TGV train as it moved through a tunnel at 44 miles per hour, well under its top speed of 235 m.p.h.
The train, carrying 450 passengers from Paris to Lyon, stopped 54 seconds later when an automatic emergency brake went into operation, the news reports said.
