2 Shot in Santa Monica Court

Two inmates being taken to a Santa Monica courtroom were shot today, one fatally, when they overpowered and beat two female deputies and two others who tried to assist them, police said.
The inmates, whose names were not immediately known, were taken to a local hospital following the shooting, Deputy Lynda Edmonds said. The injured deputies also were hospitalized. A third arriving deputy shot the inmates, Edmonds said.
