Santa Ana’s Schilling Is Century League MVP

John Schilling, a pitcher/outfielder who led Santa Ana High School to the Century League championship and the quarterfinals of the Southern Section 3-A tournament, was named the league’s Most Valuable Player, while the Saints’ Bill Ross was named Coach of the Year.
Schilling, a senior right-hander, had an 8-1 record during the regular season and hit .468 with 25 RBIs. He is joined on the first team by pitchers Leonard Damian (Canyon) and Steve Surico (Tustin) and catcher Hector Olivares (Santa Ana).
The rest of the first team includes:
First baseman Dave Staton (Tustin), infielders Chris Gallego (El Modena), John Hefler (Santa Ana), Jeff Welsh (Orange) and Jim O’Connell (Tustin), outfielders Steve Milledge (Canyon), Eric DeGraw (Canyon), Pete Weber (Canyon) and Stacy Parker (Foothill), utility player Scott Swearingen (Villa Park) and designated hitter Corey Ahart (El Modena).
The second team includes pitchers Mike Rishoud (Tustin), John Torres (Santa Ana) and Jesus Chavez (Santa Ana Valley), catcher Ken Briggs (Foothill), first baseman John McTaggart (Foothill), infielders Kevin Taylor (Canyon), Mike Morehead (Tustin), Armando Olivares (Santa Ana) and Chris Cutliff (Foothill), outfielders Richard Tellez (Santa Ana), Carlos Lopez (Santa Ana Valley), Juan Moran (Santa Ana) and Brian Maida (Villa Park), utility player Dion Espinoza (El Modena) and designated hitter Albert Caro (Santa Ana Valley).
