Santa Ana : First Rubber Railroad Guards Being Installed

Several rubber railroad crossings--among the latest innovations in railroad track equipment--are being installed at the Santa Ana Boulevard train intersections adjacent to the Regional Transportation Center.
The crossings, which cost almost $40,000 each, are actually track guards, about 12 feet wide and 80 feet long. They will provide motorists with a smoother ride and lessen wear-and-tear on automobiles, city spokeswoman Anne M. Parsch said. The rubber crossings, commonplace in the Midwest but relatively new to California, require virtually no maintenance, thereby doing away with maintenance-caused delays and detours, Parsch said.
The $17-million Regional Transportation Center is scheduled to open late this summer adjacent to the Civic Center. Beside serving as a local hub for railway lines, the center will house major bus companies and Orange County Transit District lines as well as airport taxi and limousine services.
Parsch said the city has plans to install the rubber crossings in other areas of Santa Ana in the future.
