WASHINGTON — The Health and Human Services Department said Friday that 110 physicians and health care providers have been kicked out of the Medicare and Medicaid systems in the last six months for fraud, abuse or incompetence.
The cases varied from a physician in Maryland who billed Medicare and Medicaid for construction costs on his home to a nursing-home maintenance man who sexually abused a patient.
The semiannual report to Congress by Inspector General Richard P. Kusserow of the Health and Human Services Department said the department also obtained 31 criminal convictions and got $6.8 million in recoveries through criminal investigations. It also collected $3 million in civil fines and penalties against health providers making fraudulent claims, he said.
