EPSOM, England — Steve Cauthen, riding Slip Anchor, led from start to finish to capture the 206th Epsom Derby, becoming the first U.S. jockey to win the British flat-racing classic in 79 years.
Slip Anchor, the 9-4 favorite in the 1 1/2-mile race, crossed the finish line more than seven lengths ahead of the 14-horse field.
Law Society was second, followed by Damister.
A crowd of more than 250,000 people, including Queen Elizabeth II, roared its approval as the 25-year-old Cauthen, who won the U.S. Triple Crown aboard Affirmed in 1978, rode past the grandstand.
He is the first jockey in history to have ridden winners in the Kentucky Derby and the Epsom Derby. The last American to win the English classic was Danny Maher, in 1906.
