The City Council has approved the purchase of two all-terrain cycles at a cost of $3,565 for police patrol of Torrance Beach.
American Honda Motor Co. had let the Police Department use two of the three-wheeled cycles at no cost for the last two years, but told the city it could no longer do so.
The Police Department had requested the purchase because the vehicles had allowed police to carry first aid kits and fire extinguishers, use a portable public address system and respond more quickly to emergencies.
The city has had seasonal police patrol of the beach for five years. The first three years police patrolled on foot.
