MESSINA, Sicily — Police arrested more than 100 Mafia suspects Saturday in a crackdown on four gangs based in the Messina area that peddled drugs and ran other rackets that extended all over Italy.
The sweep by hundreds of police officers went on through the night and all-day Saturday mainly in Messina, on the Sicilian side of the Messina straits.
Police also carried out arrests and searches in Rome, Milan, and four other cities on the Italian mainland.
The police acted on 290 arrest warrants issued by five Messina state prosecutors in charge of an investigation that began last December.
