Does Less Mean More?

The last sentence of “Some Consumers Resist End to Canceled Checks” (For What It’s Worth, April 15) invoked a memory.
Diamond wrote, “(Consumers) may also dislike banks pretending that a reduction in service is an expansion.”
It reminded me of the time, some years ago, when my bank switched from the former method of having the teller legibly stamp the date and amount of the deposit or withdrawal in my passbook by means of that now-outmoded printing gadget, to a “new” method of requiring me, the consumer, to scrawl the information by hand in pen and ink.
This regression to quaint 19th-Century custom was called, by some public relations genius, “Space Age Banking.”
