Two Welders Killed in Explosion, Fire

Two welders were killed Saturday afternoon when their torches apparently ignited an explosion and fire at an oil processing plant in Azusa, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
The 4:20 p.m. explosion at Wynn’s Friction Proofing Co. at 1151 5th St. occurred as the welders were working on an oil storage container. A Fire Department spokesmen said it was “very unsafe” for the men to weld on a storage tank.
A man who answered the plant telephone declined comment. Firefighters battled the blaze at the plant for about 40 minutes and estimated the damage at $5,000. The names of the two men killed were withheld pending notification of relatives.
