A Saudi official, who asked not to be identified, said his nation had never threatened to more than quadruple production to 9 million barrels a day if other oil producers continued to violate production and price agreements. The alleged threat was widely reported earlier this week and attributed to Western diplomatic sources. The Saudi official who denied the report was quoted by the Middle East Economic Survey, an authoritative oil journal.
