W. R. Grace & Co. said its second-quarter profit fell 28% from a year earlier despite a 10% rise in revenue. Grace said operating income at its specialty chemical group fell 8% in the latest quarter, reflecting start-up costs for a new plant, weak pricing industrywide and the strong dollar’s adverse impact on overseas earnings.
Motorola reported that it earned $26 million in its second quarter, a sharp decline from the year-earlier period’s $98 million. Robert W. Galvin, chairman and chief executive, said pressure from imports and negative effects of a strong U.S. dollar hurt Motorola’s manufacturing customers, which reduced demand for Motorola’s products.
