VENICE, Italy — Venetian officials signed an agreement Friday for a construction project to protect the lagoon city from annual winter flooding.
A series of dikes and water barriers is to be built at three entrances to the lagoon.
The flooding occurs mainly between October and April. Sirens warn of approaching high water from the Adriatic, which at times covers 40%of the city.
The agreement Friday with a consortium of major Italian companies calls for spending $132 million over the next three years for initial planning and construction.
