OPPIDO MAMERTINO, Italy — The 22-year-old son of a wealthy retailer, kidnaped June 9 from his family’s home on Sicily, broke his chains and escaped barefoot from his captors Saturday, police said.
Emanuel Rinciari, who police believe was brought to the Italian mainland shortly after the kidnaping, was in good condition at paramilitary police headquarters in Oppido Mamertino, near the tip of the Italian peninsula.
The man, whose parents own a chain of clothing stores, told police that he managed to escape after he noticed one of the links in his chains had weakened. He said he worked at breaking the link whenever his captors left him alone.
