LONDON — The French consume more alcohol than any other nationality, closely followed by the Portuguese and the East Germans, according to figures published Wednesday.
The figures, produced by Britain’s Brewers’ Society, show the French drank 26 pints per head in terms of pure alcohol in 1983, compared to 25.2 pints in Portugal and 24.9 pints in East Germany.
But in wine-drinking, the French trailed Portugal and Italy. The biggest beer drinkers were in West Germany, followed by Czechoslovakia and East Germany.
