AUSTIN, Tex. — Top-seeded Guppy Troup defeated Mark Baker, 184-156, in the championship game to win the $115,000 Austin Open bowling tournament Wednesday night.
But Troup’s win was anticlimactic after Baker’s 279-278 semifinal victory over Dave Ferraro, who opened with eight straight strikes before leaving the 4-7 in the ninth frame. He spared and struck out for the 278.
Baker, out of Garden Grove, Calif., spared in the first frame and then matched Ferraro strike for strike. But he needed the first strike in the 10th for the victory, and got it.
Troup, who led the tournament since the second round Sunday, earned $16,000 for his eighth career title.
