Massachusetts was drenched by its heaviest hour’s rainfall in 30 years, closing highways and stranding motorists. In Worcester, at least 30 cars were up to their roofs in water, which was up to six feet high on some streets. At Boston’s Logan International Airport, the 2.03 inches of rain between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. broke a 1955 record. In Pennsylvania, a dam leak forced residents to flee homes in La Belle, and tornadoes downed trees in Philadelphia. Another twister struck Fort Lauderdale, Fla., injuring one person.
