Reagan’s Stand

It seems President Reagan has once again adopted the proverbial stance “see no evil, hear no evil . . .” with regard to South Africa. Otherwise, there would be no reason for his gross negligence. His reasons for refusing to place economic sanctions on South Africa are based on the idea that his “constructive engagement” maintains a foothold in South Africa; that to remove all economic ties would lessen his influence.
Fine. But why don’t these reasons hold true regarding Nicaragua? In Nicaragua he feels economic sanctions will force the Sandinista government to give in, to “say uncle.” How convenient that his convictions can be easily adapted and changed to fit his policies.
