SAN LUIS OBISPO — The Unit 2 reactor at the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant was started for the first time early today, a Pacific Gas & Electric spokesman said.
As Unit 1 produced full power, a reaction was started in the plant’s twin reactor at 2:16 a.m., spokesman Ron Weinberg said. The reactor was operating at zero power and will remain at that level for several days of testing, he said. The reactor does not produce electricity until it is operating at about 15% of its capacity, he said.
