WEST BERLIN — Said Aouita of Morocco broke Steve Cram’s 5-week-old world record in the 1,500 meters today at the Berlin track and field meet, running the event in 3 minutes, 29.45 seconds.
Aouita, the Olympic 5,000-meter champion, shaved .22 of a second off the record Cram set July 16 in Nice, France. Cram, of Great Britain, had been the first person to finish the 1,500 under 3:30. It was Aouita’s second world record in a month. He also broke the 5,000-meter mark on July 27 with a 13:00.40 time in Oslo, Norway.
