Swimmer Matt Biondi won his third gold medal of the World University Games at Kobe, Japan, with a victory in his specialty, the 100-meter freestyle. Biondi’s time of 49.14 seconds fell short of his world record of 48.95, set Aug. 4 at Mission Viejo.

Biondi earlier won gold medals in the 200-meter freestyle and the 800-meter freestyle relay, and placed second silver in the 100-meter butterfly. He plans to swim in two more relays.

The Soviet Union’s Igor Polyanski won the men’s 200-meter backstroke in 1:59.76, breaking the University Games record of 2:00.42 but falling short of his own world record of 1:58.14. Patty Sabo of Dearborn, Mich., won the women’s 400-meter freestyle in 4:16.23, and Carmen Bunaciu of Romania won the women’s 100-meter backstroke in 1:03.67.

In women’s basketball, the United States ran its record to 3-0 with a 77-36 victory over Britain. Katrina McClain of the University of Georgia scored 16 points, and Cindy Brown of Cal State Long Beach had 11. The Soviet Union is also 3-0 after a 59-35 win over Canada.

In men’s gymnastics, Dmitry Bilozerche of the Soviet Union won four gold medals. Bilozerche, who earlier won the men’s all-around competition, won two individual events--the parallel bars and the rings--and tied for first in two others--the floor exercise and the side horse.
