PASSAIC, N.J. — A spectacular blaze destroyed this city’s industrial center, wiping out the jobs of up to 3,000 workers and leaving 500 people homeless, officials said today.
The fire was controlled shortly before 1 a.m. today, about 10 1/2 hours after it was reported Monday afternoon. It destroyed 19 buildings and forced the evacuation of dozens of others. Police said the fire apparently started in a trash bin.
