California motorists had their safest Labor Day weekend in 10 years, with 44 deaths reported on the state’s roadways, the California Highway Patrol said. “That is the lowest total since 1975,” CHP spokesman Kent Milton said. For the same time period in 1984, 69 deaths were reported, Milton said. Nine people died on highways in Los Angeles County and 554 were arrested for drunk driving. Last year, 14 people were killed and 615 were arrested for drunk driving during the three-day holiday, the CHP said.
