TEHRAN — Iran’s supreme leader, the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, on Wednesday inaugurated President Ali Khamenei for a second four-year term in office and added a warning.
The 84-year-old leader, looking well, called Khamenei a “respected scholar, . . . one who has served Islam sincerely.” Then he added: “But his appointment is only valid as long as he abides by Islam and supports the deprived. Powerful people only want more power.”
Khomeini sat on a green-painted concrete platform while his son, Ahmed, read the appointment decree to officials and ambassadors.
In his acceptance speech, Khamenei said he will carefully choose his prime minister and promised to carry out the war with Iraq and to defend Iran against corruption.
