The Boston Marathon formally buried its amateur tradition with the announcement of a 10-year, $10-million sponsorship deal with the John Hancock insurance company.
The agreement announced by the Boston Athletic Assn. names the company as the race’s major corporate sponsor and marks the first time in the history of the 89-year-old marathon that winners will receive prize money.
