TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Gov. Bob Graham today asked the Florida Cabinet to reconsider granting clemency to convicted “mercy killer” Roswell Gilbert, whose bid for release on appeal failed two weeks ago.
Gilbert, a 76-year-old retired Fort Lauderdale engineer, was convicted May 9 of shooting his wife, Emily, who suffered from Alzheimer’s disease and osteoporosis, a painful, degenerative bone ailment. Gilbert said he shot his wife of 51 years twice in the head to end her suffering. Prosecutors contended that Gilbert killed her because she had become a burden to him.
