Canyon Takes Advantage of Corona Errors, 35-0

Canyon High School exploited an inexperienced and error-prone Corona team for an 35-0 season-opening victory Saturday in front of 500 fans at Fred Kelly Stadium.
The Comanches capitalized on six Corona turnovers, including three pass interceptions by Brett Hatz to turn the game in to rout. Two other Comanche touchdowns--a 68-yard pass from Todd French to Chuck Zacour, and a 94-yard interception return by Troy Oliver, were nullified by penalties.
Canyon turned Corona fumbles on the Panthers’ first two possessions into easy touchdowns. The first came on a 21-yard option pass from Matt Waddell to Zacour and the second was on a 39-yard fumble return by Jeff Harrison.
French, who completed 14 of 25 passes for 202 yards and 3 touchdowns, hit Hatz for a 20-yard score with 5:39 remaining in the half for a 21-0 lead.
After hitting Steve Lichtenwalter with a three-yard scoring pass with 10:21 left in the game for a 28-0 lead, French unleashed a long pass to Zacour for a school record 80-yard scoring play at the 8:20. The strike came after Hatz halted Corona at the Comanche five-yard line with an interception.
