Local News in Brief : Site Near Hansen Dam on Waste-Plant List

A site south of Hansen Dam was among 20 named Tuesday by the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts as potential locations for the county’s proposed system of hazardous-waste treatment plants.
Use of the site on Sheldon Street, between Glenoaks Boulevard and San Fernando Road, was quickly opposed by City Councilman Howard Finn, in whose district it is.
Finn said the county’s proposal to build six waste-treatment plants in industrial areas of the county is “the wrong way to approach the toxic waste problem. Wastes should be treated at the site where they are generated, not hauled over city streets to a treatment plant.”
The Sheldon Street site is now occupied by a city-operated steam plant.
The county’s proposal, patterned after similar treatment and disposal methods used in Germany and Denmark, calls for a system of plants that would turn hazardous wastes into less hazardous dry residues for burial.
