Rio Mesa quarterback Steve Carolan hit wide receiver Aaron Nordquist with a 22-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter to wipe out a 3-0 Oxnard lead and put the Spartans ahead to stay . . .The TD play set off a bench-clearing brawl that resulted in the ejection of five players . . . Rio Mesa defensive back John Northcutt intercepted a twice-deflected pass and ran it in for a 26-yard score in the fourth quarter to ice the victory . . . kicker Robert Cardenas’ 27-yard field goal in the first quarter accounted for Oxnard’s only points.

Quarterback Steve Carolan (RM) completed 9 of 13 passes for 116 yards and a touchdown. Wide Receiver Aaron Nordquist (RM) caught only one pass but it was a 22-yarder for a touchdown. Wide receiver Mike Runge (RM) caught three passes for 29 yards. Tight end John Northcutt (RM) nabbed two passes for 21 yards and ran back an interception for a TD. Running back Wayne Jones (O) carried 19 times for 94 yards, 89 in the first half before he went out with an injury.
