Thoroughly enjoyed Theodore Scull’s article on the cruise between Helsinki and Stockholm (Sept. 15). Most writers seem to experience this cruise only during the summer months with the midnight sun. How unfortunate. Last February we boarded the Silja Line’s Silvia Regina for the most exciting and unusual travel experience ever. Luckily, we booked an outside cabin and recommend nothing less.
Due to severe winter temperatures the Baltic was frozen, but these ships crossing these sea lanes are built for ice cutting. Like schoolchildren, we spent most of the night looking out our cabin windows watching the ice floes being pushed aside. The sounds of the ice sliding against the ship are unforgettable. After three days in Stockholm we happily reboarded the Silvia Regina for the return to Helsinki. The duty-free shops and the fabulous Scandinavian meals, along with the passage through the ice, are not to be missed.
