As a child in Halifax, Nova Scotia, it was quite usual for us to romp around the headstones of the more than 200 Titanic victims interred there in tranquil Fairview Cemetery.
Most graves of the many unidentified souls are simply marked “Died with the SS Titanic April 15, 1912.” However one identified crew member had a most fitting epitaph, it read: “Sacred to the memory of Everett Edward Elliott of the heroic crew SS Titanic, died on duty April 15, 1912. Aged 24 years. Each man stood at his post while all the weaker ones went by and showed once more to all the world how Englishmen should die.”
