The Census Bureau said a survey showed that there were 339,239 black-owned businesses in 1982, a 47% increase over 1977. Service and retail trade businesses composed the majority of black-owned firms. Overall gross receipts totaled $12.4 billion in 1982, up nearly 44% from $8.6 billion five years earlier, the bureau said.
