Valley College 26, West L.A. 10--Valley College shook a bad case of the fumbles and managed to hold on to defeat West Los Angeles in a Southern California Conference opener for both teams.
Valley dropped the ball nine times and lost four.
Good play by the Monarch defense--led by Alain Greer, Danny Duffy and John Pennington--kept the Oilers from scoring. The Valley defense allowed West L.A. only two first downs in the first half.
By halftime, the Monarchs could only muster a 3-0 lead on a 41-yard field goal by Harry Konstantinopoulos.
The Monarchs exploded for 23 points in the second half.
With 8:44 remaining in the fourth quarter, Valley wide receiver Willie Howze ran 48 yards on a reverse for a touchdown to make the score 11-0. After a two-point conversion, Valley led 13-0.
Valley scored its final touchdown on a 34-yard pass from Morris to a wide-open Vincent Burrell with 5:40 left in the game.
Morris was 4 of 7 passing for 46 yards and two touchdowns. He was intercepted once.
Valley improved to 3-1 overall with the victory. West L.A. fell to 3-2 overall.
